چکیده

Our present inter& in the metabolism of sedoheptulose originated unexpectedly from the discovery of its monophosphate as a product of incubation of rat liver supernatant and adenosine (I). In the course of this work, a process was devised for isolating the sedoheptulose monophosphate product and for preparing from it, scdohcptulosan, in pure crystalline form. The principles which were the basis of that research have now been utilized in a search for sedoheptulose phosphate in calf liver. This mctabolite has now been isolated and has been characterized not only as the phosphate-free crystalline sedoheptulosan but also as crystalline scdohcptulosan tetrabenzoate. In this paper, an account of these results is presented.

The Mechanism of Pentose Phosphate Conversion to Hexose Monophosphate

Evidence for the conversion of pentose phosphate to hexose monophosphate via sedoheptulose phosphate has been obtained with extracts of rat liver (1) and spinach leaves (2). It has been demonstrated that sedoheptulose phosphate is formed from pentose phosphate by the action of the enzyme transketolase (3) and that hexose monophosphate is formed from sedoheptulose phosphate by the enzyme transal...

The Coupled Reaction Catalyzed by the Enzymes Transketolase and Transaldolase. Ii. Reaction of Erythrose 4-phosphate and the Transaldolase-dihydroxyacetone Complex.

The conversion of hexose monophosphate to sedoheptulose 7phosphate, first detected by Bonsignore et al. (1) in dialyzed liver extracts, and by Dische (2) in red cell hemolysates, can be attributed to the presence of transketolase and transaldolase in these extracts (3, 4). With highly purified preparations of transketolase and transaldolase, free of phosphoglucose isomerase and xylulose 5-phosp...

A coupled reaction catalyzed by the enzymes transketolase and transaldolase.

The formation of pentose phosphate from hexose monophosphate involves either the oxidative pathway from glucose 6phosphate through 6-phosphogluconate or the series of nonoxidative transfer reactions catalyzed by transketolase and transaldolase, in which sedoheptulose 7-phosphate is an intermediate (1). In mammalian tissues the nonoxidative pathway appears to play a major role (2-5), accounting ...
